About Veritas Prep and the Holyoke Public Schools

Friends of Veritas and the Holyoke Public Schools are excited to come together to launch Veritas Prep Middle School (“Veritas Prep”) in Holyoke as a part of the district’s innovative turnaround effort. This partnership is founded on the belief that all students, regardless of race, class, or socioeconomic circumstance, are entitled to a high quality education defined by high expectations.  The mission of Veritas Prep Middle School is to prepare students in grades 5-8 to compete, achieve, and succeed in high school, college, and beyond. Veritas Prep provides a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and character education within a safe and positive learning environment. We utilize an extended school day and year and data-driven instruction to drive dramatic gains in student achievement.  The school will begin in year one with fifth graders only and will grow to serve students in grades five through eight.

Recently, HPS has embarked on an exciting middle school and high school redesign process that is aligned with the vision of a pathway for every student and desire to create more choice for students and families. Position:

Our Associate Teaching position is a tremendous opportunity for aspiring urban educators committed to closing the achievement gap. After a competitive application process, our Associate Teachers are placed on grade-level teams for a year-long (paid) apprenticeship in great teaching. Throughout the year, Associate Teachers participate in targeted professional development and co-planning sessions, slowly taking on more and more classroom responsibilities. Associate Teachers provide one-on-one tutoring; help with lesson planning and curriculum preparation; and ultimately lead their own classes and lessons. After a year of close mentorship and training, the majority of our Associate Teachers are ready to take on their own classroom as a full-time teacher.

Job Expectations:

-Implement school-wide procedures and routines to build a culture of high expectations

-Under the supervision and coaching of a mentor teacher, practice planning and teaching identified subject area classes to a whole group of students regularly 

-Tutor individual and small groups of students in various subject areas
-Participate actively in professional development and incorporate feedback into teaching and tutoring practices

-Participate in assigned duties such as leading lunch, community meetings, break room, substituting
-Cultivate positive relationships with colleagues, students,  parents and families
-Demonstrate a growth mindset for yourself and your scholars
